Monthly Letter 5, 2004

Greetings people from Peace G. I hope blessings and love are filling everyone’s lives.

I have been moved to B-Yard, cell number B4-241L. B-Yard is about 90 yards away from A-Yard, and behind another razor wire fence. The yards look the same, but all buildings and things are in reverse.

The warders are different and the program is very different also. There is hardly any yard or other programs. The California Department of Corrections, and this prison PVSP, are under a state of emergency, and are moving prisoners from prison to prison and yard to yard.

I have found so far that the B-Yard warders – most of the ones I have encountered – are more petty than A-Yard warders. I have also found that the B-Yard prisoners are more petty and set trip more than A-Yard prisoners. If one is not from their gang or part of town, you are frowned upon. I am from planet earth, and I figure the whole planet I am part of.

One of our short films, made by Michel – "Three Poems by Spoon Jackson" – has been invited to be part of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival in New York, at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center. The festival runs from June 11-14. Except for a couple people, I don’t know if anyone in New York reads our website. If so, I hope you will attend the festival.

Writing Class

No writing class, and so far there are no programs on this yard. But hopefully once the state of emergency is over and the yard is open like it is supposed to be, perhaps some kind of program will happen. I have read some inspiring work and have exchanged thoughts with Katie, who teaches a college class in literature, and her students. So that was real.

Stay Real Section

Remember to walk in your own shoes, youngsters, and to be loving and kind and real. Keep your life flowing and growing. Keep reading, because that can introduce yourself to yourself. Remember also to learn one new thing a day, if only a word. It is okay not to do anything to hurt others or yourself. Remember to let go and write from your heart and soul. No one sees or feels things exactly like you.

Bird and Cat Stuff

The birds don’t seem to come on this yard like they did on A-Yard. They mainly appear on the fringes of the yard. After yard recall, some show. I have seen only one bird feeder here, other than myself. There is one place on the corner of Building One where one can call and feed the birds. Only a couple of sparrows respond to my bird call so far. I have seen no baby sparrows, black birds or cow birds on this yard, even at that feeding area, which means the grown up birds don’t trust this yard.

I saw one male cat that used to live on A-Yard a few months ago. I suppose he branched out to his own territory. He is sometimes at the corner of this chow hall, and he recognizes my cat call and I feed him from time to time. He is always alone, even though the shape of the little area where I see him is the same as on A-Yard. The other day, near One Building, I saw a wide bushy faced white cat by the school trailers.

I miss the birds and cats from A-Yard, whole families of cats and birds. Cats that came running to me each morning before work. How the birds were beginning to bring there offspring around to feed them. Before I left A-Yard, the warders had the baby bird feeding bush torn out.

Closing Thoughts

Remember to keep your head up, glowing and growing, walking in peace, love and realness.

Stay Real, Spoon.
