Freedom for
the prisoners
-Can you write the music to some of these lyrics? a pen pal to
Spoon Jackson asked Stefan Säfsten and hand over quite a lot
of Spoon’s work. Stefan, who did not knew anything about Spoon
Jackson, perused the poems and directly felt that not only choose
a few to set to music, but to do something more. He picked out nine
lyrics to a svit for choir and orchestra called “Freedom for
the prisoners”.
In May 2004 Stefan introduced the first performance of the composition
and in June 2005 he released a CD with the choir “Järva
Röster” and an ensemble from “The Orchestra of
the Royal Opera house”, some of the foremost studio musicians
in Sweden and Stefan Säfsten as conductor.
Stefan has endeavored to render the lyrical picture of Spoon’s
poetry. Spoon writes about life, about love, the nature, and the
creation, about the divergence between rich and poor. He philosophizes
upon the possibility to be free even if you are in prison just as
well as fettered not living behind bars.
The prisons in Sweden as well as the prisons in California inundates
from people who have loosed their belief about a bright future.
Spoon’s talent to express his feelings in poetry has given
him back his human dignity. To seeing it set to music has been a
bridge out to the real life. Around the world there are a great
number of human dignities to take charge of and protect. Most of
the prisoners have committed criminal actions, but there are no
reasons to prevent the society from human treatments.
